The Republic of Korea is establishing fruitful cooperation not only with Russian politicians, but also with Russian business circles. Summing up the results of one hundred days of his tenure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Russia, Mr. Woo Yun Geun, spoke about this in an interview with the TV channel "Greater Asia".

General Director
TV channel and website "Greater Asia":

– Hello, dear viewers of the Big Asia TV channel. Today we are visiting the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Russian Federation, Mr. Woo Yun Geun.

Your Excellency, first of all, let me congratulate you on a very significant date, today is 100 days of your tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea Korea in the Russian Federation.

WOONG GEUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

– Hello, thank you.

Indeed, it's been 100 days since I've been working as Ambassador to Russia.

As our President Moon Jae-in said, in the 27 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Russia and the Republic of Korea have achieved important results. But 2018 will be a turning point. We hope that this year there will be a breakthrough in our bilateral relations.

I must say that I am a politician, not a professional diplomat. And in appointing me as Ambassador, the President entrusted me with three special missions.

The first mission is to organize high-level meetings between our President and Russian President Vladimir Putin on a regular basis.

I would like trusting relations to be established between them.

The same trusting relations should be strengthened not only at the level of presidents, but also with other high-ranking representatives of Russia. To do this, it is necessary to constantly contact them.

The Presidents of our countries have already had two personal meetings. As I have noticed, trusting relations have been established between them.

I hope that this year they will also be able to personally discuss important issues concerning Russia and Korea.

In addition, contacts between the heads of the parliaments of the two countries.

The second task that the President set before me is related to the economic cooperation between Korea and Russia. We need to achieve concrete results.

As you know, a special Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation has been set up under the administration of the President of the Republic of Korea. It should help in the implementation of the Nine Bridges strategy proposed by our President.

I would like to emphasize that last year the trade turnover between our countries amounted to about $19 billion. This is more than 40 percent higher than in 2016.

We hope that important steps will be taken this year to help create a free trade area between Korea and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union in the near future.
< br> We continue cooperation in projects such as Yamal LNG, the development of the Northern Sea Route, the development of shipbuilding.

In addition, in the Far East, our businessmen take part in creating a cluster in the fishery industry, modernizing the shipyard at the plant "Zvezda", in the electric power industry and construction of railways.

The Korean side is making every effort to increase the trade turnover between our countries to $30 billion by 2020.

If this indicator can be achieved, then Korea will be among Russia's top five foreign trade partners.

The third task that the President has set for me is to strengthen public diplomacy.

Speaking of the Winter Olympics in Korea, I would like to to remind you that Russia will host the World Cup this year.

There are about 200 countries in the world, but only seven of them have been honored to host both the Olympics and the World Cup. These are Italy, France, Germany, USA, Japan. And now Korea and Russia have been added to them.

Of course, the Korean side expresses regret that many of your outstanding athletes could not take part in the Olympics. As for those who came, the Korean people did their best to support and cheer for the Russian athletes during the competition.

I would like to say that Korea and Russia are ahead of many other countries in the field of culture and sports.

Of course, our cooperation in politics and economy is very important. But I would also like to focus on such areas as sports, education, tourism and culture.

The number of mutual visits of our citizens at the moment is about 500,000 people a year. We would like to increase this figure to one million.

In the hundred days of my work as Ambassador, I have had many important meetings.

For example, with State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and other deputies. I also met with Presidential Aide Igor Levitin and Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev. And also with many officials of the economic bloc of the government.

In addition, I was received by the head of Sberbank German Gref and the head of the Novatek gas company Leonid Mikhelson.

There were also many meetings with scientists and leaders of leading universities in your country. For example, with the rectors of MGIMO and the Higher School of Economics.

They received me very warmly. And, taking this opportunity, I would like to express my deep gratitude to them.

Everyone I met told me that Korea is not only a good partner for Russia, but also a friend.

How in politics, so in economics and culture.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
TV channel and website "Greater Asia":

- Thank you very much, first of all, for your support  our athletes during the Olympics. We feel that the Korean people, Korean fans treat with warmth and love, understanding the problems that our team had during the Olympic Games.

The whole world saw another very important sign - the rapprochement of North and South Korea within the hosting the Olympics.

North Korean leader KIM JONG UN is impressed with his delegation's stay at the Winter Olympics and the official North Korean news agency reports that the DPRK leader expressed his gratitude to South Korea after the return of his sister and other dignitaries from the Olympic Pyeongchang. Could you tell our TV viewers and users of the site bigasia.ru about the possibility of further de-escalation of the conflict on the peninsula, which, unfortunately, has been developing for more than a dozen years, and what ways you see the rapprochement of the two Koreas.

WOO YUN GEUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

- I would like to emphasize that the decision on the participation of DPRK athletes in the joint Olympic team of Korea, our common passage at the opening ceremony contributed to the reduction of tension on the Korean peninsula.

It is necessary to maintain the atmosphere of such dialogue in the future. This is the principled position of our President. But at the same time, the support of the world community is important.

I draw your attention to this fact. For the participation of DPRK athletes in the Olympics, our country spent 2.8 billion Korean won.

This amount was allocated from a special fund for the unification of the two Koreas. In total, this fund has already accumulated approximately five trillion Korean won.

We are ready to continue to allocate funds for our countries to become a single state.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
TV channel and Internet site "Greater Asia":

- This is a very important topic that interests, I am sure, not only the states of Southeast Asia, but the whole world. Because there is no doubt that if the unification process turns to fruitful cooperation, this will not only change the geopolitical situation in Southeast Asia, it will affect all the leading trends in world development in politics, the economy, and the military sphere. And I would very much like our viewers to hear firsthand if there are any plans already, and how you see the prospect of a possible unification of North and South Korea.

Woo Yung Geun
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation< br>
- I completely agree with you. Reducing tension on the Korean Peninsula will not only affect the situation in our region, but will also affect Russia, China and other countries.
But for dialogue with North Korea, it is very important to interact with countries that are related to this problem . I'm talking about the US, China and Russia.

This is not an easy question. Because each of these countries has its own position, which does not always coincide with the position of other partners.

Nevertheless, all participants in the negotiations have a common goal - to solve the problem peacefully.

More I emphasize once again that in order to achieve complete peace on the Korean Peninsula, it is very important to cooperate with neighboring countries, primarily with Russia and China.
At the same time, the most important thing is to improve relations between the two Koreas.

President.

And if North Korea imposes a ban on nuclear tests and missile launches, then we are ready to continue dialogue with our northern neighbor.

At the same time, it is important to improve relations between North Korea and the United States. At present, we are making every effort to ensure that this dialogue takes place.

Contacts between the two Koreas have begun to expand and this is a very good chance.

However, we cannot guarantee that the North will not continue provocative actions.

Therefore, we need patience and time.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
TV channel and website "Greater Asia":

– On February 13, you met with MGIMO Rector Mr. Torkunov.

What priority areas of humanitarian cooperation do you see today?< br>

Woo YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

- Our conversation with the rector of MGIMO was very substantive and productive.

MGIMO is one of the leading universities in Russia.

During the meeting, we discussed issues of mutual recognition of diplomas. It is planned to expand the so-called student exchange.

Assistance to Korean scientists and students was also discussed with the rector. For our part, we allocate grants to teachers of the Korean language.

But we would like to expand such cooperation.

For example, it is planned to hold a large joint seminar on Korea and create special programs for Russian students and teachers who help them get to know our country better.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
Asia”:

– Big Asia TV channel signs an agreement with the Institute of Asian and African countries of Moscow State University, headed by Mr. Abylgaziev. We have already agreed that the Big Asia TV channel and the bigasia.ru website will be a single platform for the Institute of Asian and African countries, that the direction that illuminates the life of the Republic of Korea today should become a serious area. We will be very happy if we work together with the embassy in this direction.

Woo Yung Geun
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

- I would like to praise you and I think that this is a very interesting initiative. After all, Asia is the most important region of the world, if we talk about the economy. In this regard, we are superior to Europe and I am sure that a bright future awaits us.

That's why it's right that your TV company focuses on Asian countries. I hope that this will contribute to deeper cooperation between Russia and the states of Asia.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
< b> TV channel and Internet site "Greater Asia":

– And this is exactly the thesis that leads to my next question. Unfortunately, today the level of information exchange between Russia and the Republic of Korea, & nbsp; as with many other Asian countries, it is extremely low, it does not correspond to the level of political and economic relations.

What can we do together with you, Mr. Ambassador, with the embassy in order to improve information exchange? So that in Russia they know more about how the Republic of Korea lives today, know about history and see the vector for tomorrow.

U YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation
< br> – This is a very good remark.

After all, for example, the number of flights between Russia and Korea is ten times less than between China and our country.

In order for our peoples to better understand each other, it is very important to expand humanitarian ties.

That is why the Korean embassy relies on the organization of various cultural events. With the help of the Korean Cultural Center in Moscow, we hold traditional spring and autumn festivals. As part of these activities, we organize a film festival and a concert. In addition, we introduce Korean cuisine to the citizens of your country.

In July of this year, the international industrial exhibition Innoprom will be held in Yekaterinburg. We take part in it as a partner country. And of course, Korea will hold various cultural events at this exhibition.

It must be honestly said that in the past years we have paid little attention to humanitarian cooperation. And only recently it has become more active. I really hope that this will help further strengthen mutual understanding between our peoples. Although this, of course, will take time.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
TV channel and website "Big Asia":

- As for the remark about flights between China and the Republic of Korea, and Moscow, I can only say that in Russia the number of inhabitants is 10 times less than in China. But this does not mean that there is no basis for building up contacts.

The program of the Republic of Korea to promote the achievements of Korean medicine abroad is already quite active in Russia.

And we will be glad if we can, on the platform of Greater Asia, provide an opportunity for such large state programs to promote the achievements of the Republic of Korea, which, perhaps, Russian residents still know little about.

WOO YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation b>

– I think you have offered me a very good idea.

I would like to note that recently large Korean companies are establishing contacts with their Russian counterparts.

Our countries are cooperating in the field of medicine. For example, in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, where an international medical cluster has been created, it is planned to open a large Korean polyclinic.

Over the past ten years, medical technologies in our country have successfully developed. We are even ahead of the Americans in this regard And thanks to the development of medicine, the average life expectancy in Korea has reached 80 years.

And your proposal to actively cover the life of our country on the TV channel and the site "Greater Asia » we fully support.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
Big Asia TV channel and website :

– Thank you. I want you to know that from today our TV channel and website are also a full-fledged media platform for the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and for you personally, to promote all those humanitarian and other projects that will contribute to the development of relations between Russia and the Republic of Korea.< br>

Woo YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

Thank you very much!

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
TV channel and the website "Greater Asia":

- In 100 days you were able, I hope, not only to hold working meetings with politicians, heads of educational institutions, but also to get to know Moscow a little, what kind of first impressions of the capital of Russia?

U YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

– Moscow is not a new city for me.

I have been here and more. But it never happened to spend 100 days in a row in Moscow.
The biggest problem for me is that there is little sun here in winter. But, on the other hand, maybe it's good that I managed to spend the Russian winter in Moscow?

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
CEO< br> TV channel and Internet site "Greater Asia":

– I am very glad that you have a wonderful impression of Moscow. I will say for sure that the Russian winter will end someday and there will be a beautiful spring and there is always a bright summer in Moscow, so I hope that you will be able to enjoy all the seasons in Moscow more than once.

WOO YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

– Thank you!

When I lived in Korea, I rarely enjoyed music and theater to the fullest. A lot of time was spent on political activities.

And here in Russia for a hundred days I was lucky to visit the Bolshoi Theater more than once, in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall  and the conservatory.

In general, I have fun, especially in the evenings, in Moscow.

I also finally decided to go in for sports. To do this, I bought myself a treadmill.

In addition to learning more about the culture of Russia, my health is also improving. So I am very satisfied with life in Moscow.

But most importantly, the happiest moments are meetings with Russian friends. They are very warm welcome. The generous soul of the Russian people fascinates me.

Asia”:

– Experts say that 70% of Russian cuisine is borrowed or came to us from Asia. These are traditional dumplings, these are meat dishes on the grill. How do you feel about Russian cuisine, what do you like about traditional Russian food?

U YUN GUN
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Republic of Korea in the Russian Federation

– I like your cuisine. I fell in love with kebabs, borscht, black bread. I like vodka too.

By the way, I'll be at the Bolshoi Theater tonight.

I bought a ticket specifically to mark 100 days as an ambassador.

Actually, I I love Russia very much!

And one more thing. I think it's a great idea to name your TV company "Greater Asia".

I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for organizing this interview.

I am sure that in the future Russia and Korea will cooperate very closely at a qualitatively new level. And your TV company will play a big role in this.

As a result, I would like to emphasize that it is in 2018 that a real breakthrough in the development of relations between our countries is possible.

ALEXANDER LEBEDEV
General Director
of the Big Asia TV channel and website:

– Thank you very much for today's meaningful conversation.

I hope that we will meet regularly and let me invite you to visit our television company.
