The competition will be held until August 10 in the historic city of Mahabalipuram near Chennai.

"For the first time, the Chess Olympiad is being held in the homeland of this game — in India. She came to Asia three decades later. On behalf of every Indian, I thank FIDE [The International Chess Federation] for this event," the Prime Minister said. Narendra Modi stressed that sport plays an important role — it brings peoples and societies closer.

"Today is a day of great pride for India. We are honored to host the first Chess Olympiad [in India]," said the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin. "Out of 73 grandmasters in India, 26 are from Tamil Nadu. It's a game of intelligence and strategy. I am proud that Tamil Nadu is doing well in chess. Chennai can rightly be called the chess capital of India," he added.

The head of FIDE is a RussianArkady Dvorkovich in his speech expressed gratitude to the residents of Chennai and Tamil Nadu, the state and Indian governments for organizing and holding the event. "I am sure that this event will change chess in India, make it ten times more significant," Dvorkovich said, adding that the Olympics will change the chess world as well. "We are united, we are one family and we will remain so forever," the head of FIDE noted.

The first Chess Olympiad in the homeland of the game

The official announcement of the opening of the Games was preceded by a large-scale show, which presented the rich Tamil culture, heritage, traditions and national sports. All eight forms of Indian classical dance were performed. Musicians and performers of traditional songs, as well as modern singers performed.

For the first time in history, India is hosting such a representative chess tournament. Representatives of 186 countries will compete for the title of the best chess nation in the world. On the Indian side, three teams will participate in the Olympiad in the open and women's tournaments. Former Indian World championViswanathan Anand will not play, but will act as a coach.

Initially, the 44th World Chess Olympiad was supposed to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2020, but a year before the start of the competition, it was announced that the tournament would be moved to Moscow. The tournament did not take place in the capital of the Russian Federation due to coronavirus, during the pandemic FIDE held two online tournaments, which were won by the Russian national team.

Due to the situation in Ukraine, Russia was deprived of the right to hold competitions, and the national teams of the Russian Federation and Belarus were suspended from all tournaments under the auspices of FIDE.

In addition, the national teams of China and Pakistan refused to participate in the Olympics.

Ancient game and ancient monuments

The mascot of the Games was Thambi, a chess knight dressed in the national Tamil costume — a traditional male dhoti skirt (sarong) and jacket. His image in Tamil Nadu can now be seen everywhere.

As previously reported by the organizers, Mahabalipuram, located near Chennai, was not least chosen for the opening ceremony because of the ancient cultural monuments, thanks to which the coastal city has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. There are temples carved out of stone boulders in the shape of chariots, cave sanctuaries, a giant relief carved on a rock in the open air and representing scenes from the ancient epic Mahabharata, as well as an ancient temple of Shiva.

A well-established transport network, several modern hotels and ease of security also played a role.

In ancient times, this city was the main seaport of the Pallava state (IV–IX centuries.) The holding of the Olympiad near the ancient complex is also intended to remind that India is the birthplace of chess, which appeared here in ancient times.

It is believed that the first versions of such a game appeared in Hindustan even before our era, in the first centuries of our era, the chaturanga game was popular in Indian states ("four—part" - meaning an army consisting of four types of troops: infantry, cavalry, chariots and war elephants). In such a game, for the first time, different figures got a different role, and the fate of the party began to depend on the safety of only one figure, later called the king.
