Ugra is ready to host the First World Chess Paralympiad

The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO) is technically and infrastructurally ready to host the World Chess Paralympiad and the Congress of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Volunteers, specialists and doctors are now being trained, Governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug Natalia Komarova said in an interview at the TASS booth at the Gaidar Forum on Thursday.

The World Chess Olympiad is scheduled from July 26 to August 8 in Moscow, in Khanty-Mansiysk, the FIDE Congress and the first ever World Chess Paralympiad for people with disabilities are to be held.

“We are ready. And I can confirm that this is true, given that the dates of the Olympiad have already been postponed,” said Natalya Komarova.

According to her, in order to meet FIDE standards, in Khanty- In Mansiysk, a sports facility with a total area of 12 thousand square meters was built. meters, which will be used for this tournament. “We have a hotel to accommodate both tournament participants and accompanying persons, members of the FIDE congress. We are preparing a pool of specialists, doctors who will accompany the participants of this tournament, and volunteers who can use, in particular, the sign language,” said the head of Yugra.

About the tournament

Initially, it was assumed that in the summer of 2020 FIDE would hold several large-scale events in Russia. The first ever World Chess Paralympiad, the FIDE Congress and General Assembly, the opening ceremony of the Chess Olympiad were to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, the main tournament of the World Chess Olympiad was planned to be held in Moscow.

At the end of December 2020, FIDE decided to hold the Chess Olympiad postponed to 2021 and the Chess Paralympiad in Russia in 2022. It was planned that Russia would host the tournament in 2020, and Belarus in 2022. Later, the Russian tournament was postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus, and Belarus refused to host the World Chess Olympiad.

The World Chess Olympiad is a team tournament for teams that are members of FIDE. The tournament was first held in 1927 in London. Since 1950, competitions have been held in the format of a two-year cycle.

The most titled team is the USSR team (18 victories for men and 11 victories for women), the Russian men's team won the tournament six times, the women's team three times. Khanty-Mansiysk hosted the World Chess Olympiad in 2010, when the Ukrainian team became the winner of the men's tournament, and the Russian team won the women's tournament.

The Gaidar Forum is an annual international scientific and practical conference in the field of economics, which has been held since 2010.
