Tournament named after the former director of Dinamo Tbilisi Petriashvili will be held in the capital of Georgia

The international tournament named after the former football player and ex-director of Dynamo Tbilisi, manager of the department for relations with national federations of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) David Petriashvili will be held in the capital of Georgia on January 14.


This was reported by the press service of the Georgian Football Federation (FFG).

Six teams will take part in the tournament called the Winter Cup: the teams of Georgia, Spain and Italy will play in group A, in group B - Ukraine, Turkey and the team UEFA. The two best teams of both groups will reach the semi-final, the winners of which will meet in the final on Sunday, all matches will be held at the Olympic Palace, built in 2015 and accommodating about 4 thousand spectators.

Famous veteran football players will play for the Georgian national team : Kakha Kaladze (now the mayor of Tbilisi - TASS note), Levan Kobiashvili (now the president of the FFG), Alexander Iashvili and others. Famous former footballers Joan Capdevila, Marcus Senna, Jose Amavisca, Vicente Engonga and others will play for the Spanish national team, Nicola Amoruso, Massimo Agostini, Alessandro Bianchi for the Italian team, Patrick Muller, Christian Chivu, Dejan Stankovic, Milenko Acimovic for the UEFA team .

"David Petriashvili had great merits for Georgian football, he was well known and respected in European football circles, he was the personification of high professionalism. Holding this tournament is important to perpetuate his memory, to popularize football," the organizers say .

In 1987-1989 Petriashvili played for Dinamo Tbilisi (the top league of the USSR), played for the youth national team of the USSR, in 1993-2002 he worked in responsible positions in the FFG, in 2002-2006 was the managing director of Dynamo, in 2009-2015 he worked in Switzerland at UEFA headquarters. He died in an accident on the night of December 21, 2015 in Tbilisi, where he arrived for New Year's meetings with relatives and friends: David was hit by a car on one of the streets while walking on foot.
