South Korea invited North Korea to host the Youth Olympic Games together.

The authorities of Gangwon Province in the Republic of Korea have proposed to the DPRK to jointly organize the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games. Yonhap agency reported this on Tuesday.

According to his information, in August this year in Pyongyang, on behalf of the governor of the province, a letter was sent with a similar proposal. Regional authorities intend to discuss this issue with representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In addition, the South Korean side would like to see athletes from the DPRK at the competitions.

No official response from North Korea to the initiative has been reported.

As a result of the Second World War, the historical province of Gangwon-do was divided between the Soviet and American zones of occupation, then between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea. Seoul believes that the joint organization of the event with Pyongyang can improve relations between the countries.

The IOC has chosen the Republic of Korea as the venue for the Youth Games in January of this year, on November 3, the South Korean Organizing Committee began its work. The competition is scheduled for January-February 2024, and it is expected that over 2,600 athletes from 70 countries will take part in them.
