Russian curlers win a ticket to the 2022 Olympic Games

Russian curlers reached the playoffs of the World Championship and qualified for the Olympics.

Curling players from Russia lost to the Czech team with a score of 5:7 in the tenth match of the preliminary round of the World Championship, but they advanced to the playoffs of the tournament and qualified for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

The Russian team includes skip Alina Kovaleva, Vice Skip Yulia Portunova, Galina Arsenkina, Ekaterina Kuzmina and Maria Komarova.

10 teams will take part in the Olympic tournament, six qualifiers are up for grabs at the current World Championship - the teams that reach the playoffs of the world championship will get to the Games. The Russian women's team has taken part in the Olympic Games five times, the highest achievement of the team is the fifth place at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.

The Russians suffered their first defeat in the tournament, but continue to lead the tournament table with nine victories. The Russian team will play the next match against Switzerland. The game will start at 18:00 Moscow time.

14 teams are participating in the World Cup preliminary stage. They hold a round-robin tournament, according to the results of which the two best teams will advance to the semi-finals, four more teams will play play-offs for reaching this stage of the tournament. The competition is being held in Calgary, Canada and will end on May 9.

The Russian team competes at the tournament as a team of the Russian Curling Federation (RCF) in connection with the sanctions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), in case of victory, there will be no Russians sing the Russian anthem. The Russian women's team is a four-time European champion, the last time the national team won gold in 2016. The best result at the World Championship is the second place in Beijing in 2017. Four more times Russians won bronze medals of the world championship (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018).
