Elbrus will host a two-day stage of the Russian Ski Mountaineering Cup

Representatives of the Russian national team and teams of the country's constituent entities will take part in the competition.


The third stage of the Russian Ski Mountaineering Cup will be held at the Elbrus ski resort in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic from January 28 to 29. The strongest athletes of the country, including world record holders, will prove themselves in the disciplines of "vertical race" and "individual race", Kavkaz.RF JSC told reporters on Friday.

"The Elbrus resort will host the third stage of the Russian Ski Mountaineering Cup. Representatives of the Russian national team and teams of the country's constituent entities will take part in the competition. The competitions will be held from January 28 to January 29 in the disciplines of "vertical race" and "individual race," the press service reported. Athletes will go on the route at seven in the morning from the Azau Clearing to the Krugozor station, so by the time the resort opens, the track will already be free and prepared for guests.

In the vertical race, ski climbers will overcome the ascent without descents with a total climb of about 650 meters. In the individual race, four off-piste ascents and three descents are waiting for participants on the route. The judges will determine the result of the races based on the total time of passing the distances and the amount of fines.

The strongest athletes of the country will gather on Elbrus, including Nikita Filippov, a participant of the Youth Olympic Games from Kamchatka, Vitaly Shkel, a world record holder in the races on Elbrus and Lenin Peak from Kabardino-Balkaria, Evgeny Markov, a world record holder in the Kazbek race from the Chelyabinsk region, Varvara Prokhorova, a world champion in steeplechase (Spartan Race) from Moscow.

Among the participants are representatives of traditionally ski-climbing regions - Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kabardino-Balkaria, Kamchatka Krai, Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions, as well as novice regions. "The competitions are designed to continue the search and selection of the strongest athletes, to raise their overall level of training," explained Kavkaz.RF JSC.

The organizers are the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, the Russian Mountaineering Federation, the Federation of Mountaineering, Rock Climbing and Sports Tourism of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. Ski mountaineering is a sport that will be included in the official program of the Olympic Games from 2026. Competitions are held in five disciplines: vertical, individual and team races, sprint and relay. The task for athletes is to overcome distances in the mountains for a while with ascent and descent on special skis, some sections of the ski-climbers walk.
