Mongolian judoka of Iranian descent wins Olympic silver

Judoka Said Mollaei won the silver medal of the Tokyo Olympics in the category up to 81 kilograms. 


This athlete of Iranian origin plays for the Mongolian national team due to a difficult diplomatic situation.

Mollaei lost in the final to the Japanese Nagase Takanori. Nagaseperformed a throw with a wheel over his leg, landing his opponent on the tatami and thereby winning himself a victory.

Mollaeiclaims that in 2019 he was pressured by the Iranian authorities, demanding to withdraw his candidacy from participation in the World Championship, so as not to fight with an opponent from Israel. Tehran does not recognize the state of Israel.

Mollaeisaid on Tuesday that he wants to dedicate his medal to himself, his family and all those who supported him along the way.

Meanwhile, weightlifter Polina Guryeva became the first Olympic medalist from Turkmenistan. She won silver in the category up to 59 kg.
