Minister of Sports of the Russian FederationOleg Matytsin on Wednesday at a joint meeting of the boards of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus announced the holding of the open University Games of the BRICS countries.

"The Universiade was supposed to take place in August," he saidOleg Matytsin. — As part of the interaction of the BRICS countries, we put forward the idea of holding the BRICS Open University Games, the president supported it. As our closest partners and friends, I invite Belarusian universities to take part in them."

On February 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions due to the situation around Russia and Ukraine. On April 29, the Executive committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) decided to move the venue of the 2023 Universiade from Yekaterinburg. The competition was scheduled to take place from August 7 to August 19.

BRICS is an informal interstate association that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
