Media: about 20 people will be part of the DPRK sports delegation at the 2018 Olympics

The sports delegation of the DPRK at the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang will consist of 20 people.


This is reported by the South Korean edition of The Hankyoreh.

According to the publication, the delegation will include 10 athletes and 10 officials. Figure skaters Tae Ok Em and Chu Sik Kim, who compete in sports pairs, have won the only Olympic license so far. Several more athletes may qualify for the Olympic Games.

In addition, the DPRK is going to send its dancers and musicians, as well as a demonstration team of taekwondo masters, to the Winter Olympics. Representatives of the country requested permission to deliver some of their representatives by plane.

The size and composition of the delegation of the parties will be discussed on January 20 at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with representatives of the National Olympic Committees of South Korea and the DPRK, which will be held in Lausanne. It will also be attended by high-ranking officials from South Korea and North Korea. The meeting will be chaired by IOC President Thomas Bach.

On Tuesday, the first round of dialogue on the normalization of relations between the Republic of Korea and the DPRK took place. As a result of the talks, the parties agreed to resume the work of the hotline between the military of the two countries, hold consultations on reducing tensions at the border, and also that the DPRK will send a representative government delegation, a demonstration team of taekwondo athletes, fans and support group.

The Olympic Games will be held from 9 to 25 February.
