Japanese samurai are ready to become combat sambists

According to Nobuyuki Asai, Vice-President of the Sambo Federation of the Land of the Rising Sun, the skill of fans of self-defense without weapons is growing year by year.


According to TASS, the results of the Japanese SAMBO Championship for the Cup of Russian President Vladimir Putin were summed up in Tokyo on Sunday. 

The competitions were held in nine weight categories for men and four for women. The winners are waiting for the World Cup, which will be held in the capital of Russia.

The Sambo Federation intends to develop the martial direction.

"I can say that the level of our sambists is growing every year. Now sambo is represented in Japan in its sports component, but in the future we would like to start performing in combat SAMBO," said Mr. Nobuyuki Asai, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of the International SAMBO Federation. 

He also expressed the intention of athletes to achieve outstanding results not only at the national level, but also at the world level.

The peak of Sambo enthusiasm in Japan falls on the period from the late 70s to the early 90s. This sport gained another round of popularity among the Japanese on the eve of the 2013 Universiade in Kazan. 

This championship was the 45th in history and the seventh for the Russian President's Cup.
