Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu became a two-time Olympic champion

Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu won gold at the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. This medal was the 1000th gold medal in the history of the Winter Games.

In the sum of two programs, the athlete, who made two blots in free skate, showed a result of 317.85 points, his compatriot Shoma Uno (306.90) took second place, and Spaniard Javier Fernandez (305.24) took third place (305.24).

American Nathan Chen performed six quadruple jumps in the free program, becoming the first figure skater in history who managed to do it. This allowed him to score a record 215.08 points for free skate, however, due to an unsuccessful performance in the short program (84.53 points, 17th place), the American received a total of 297.35 points and took fifth place.

Gold became for 23-year-old Khanyu the second in his career, at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, he also excelled in single skating. He became the first figure skater since 1952 who managed to win gold at two Games in a row, previously a similar achievement was set by the American Dick Button (1948, 1952). Hanyu also has two world championship golds and four victories in the Grand Prix finals. Hanyu brought the Japanese team the first gold at the current Games, the Japanese team has nine medals in total (1 + 5 + 3).

The Russians at the Games in Pyeongchang perform in a truncated composition under the Olympic flag due to the suspension of the membership of the Olympic Committee Russia. The Olympics will end on February 25.
