Japanese athletes will receive a booster dose ahead of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Japanese athletes and members of the country's delegation to the Beijing Winter Olympics will be vaccinated in advance with the third dose of the coronavirus vaccine. This was reported on Saturday by the Kyodo agency.

Booster immunization began in Japan in December last year, but so far it is limited to healthcare workers. Nursing home residents will also be vaccinated this month. Nevertheless, it was decided to make an exception for athletes and members of the delegation due to the spread of the omicron strain.

Prior to the Tokyo Games in the summer of 2021, Japanese athletes and sports officials were also able to receive two doses of the vaccine as a matter of priority.

The Japanese side at the Olympics in China will be represented by sports officials, including the chairman of the organizing committee for this year's Tokyo Games, Seiko Hashimoto, a member of the upper house of parliament. The head of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita, will also go to the capital of China, and the head of the country's Paralympic Committee, Kazuyuki Mori, will attend the Winter Paralympics.

The XXIV Winter Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022, and Paralympics from 4 to 13 March.
