Gymnasts compete for world championship in Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu will host the Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021.


The Japanese city of Kitakyushu will host the 2021 Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships. This was reported by the press service of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).


Initially, the world championship in artistic gymnastics was supposed to be held in Copenhagen, but the Danish side refused to hold the world championship due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thus, in    the World Artistic Gymnastics World Championship will be held in Japan and follow  World Championship in rhythmic-gymnastics 


The World Championships in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics are held every year, with the exception of those years in which the Olympic Games are held. No World Championships were scheduled for 2020, however, the Tokyo Olympics have been rescheduled for next year, so both the World Championships and the Olympics will be held in 2021.


At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2019, the Russian team took second place in the unofficial team standings, winning three gold, silver and bronze awards. At the world championship in rhythmic gymnastics, the Russians won eight gold medals out of nine, and also two silver and three bronze medals.
