Astana to host Russian Billiards World Championship

64 players in the men's grid and 32 in the women's grid will fight for the championship title in the "dynamic pyramid" discipline. The championship will be held in the capital of Kazakhstan on April 5-8 and will bring together the best athletes from countries of near and far abroad. 

Players will arrive from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Tajikistan. Kazakhstan will put up a “golden team” for the competition. The host team will include three-time world champion and winner of the European and Asian championships Alikhan Karaneev, as well as Yernar Chimbaev and Alibek Omarov, both world champions in the combined pyramid, Kazinform reports. In addition, Arbi Mutsiev, who recently became the champion of the republic, is expected to participate. 

According to Ansar Karaneev, President of the Billiard Sports Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the prize fund of the tournament will be 12 million tenge. He also noted that in recent years the level of competition has grown significantly. 

“20 years ago, no one imagined that Russian billiards would become a full-fledged sport. When we held the first Republican championship, only eight players gathered. Today, we receive 200 applications for such tournaments, and much more for the World Championship. Russian billiards is actively developing, including at the international level. We have already managed to include it in the program of the Asian Games,” the agency quotes Karaneev as saying. 

The tournament is held by the Federation of Billiard Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with the International Pyramid Confederation (ICP) under the auspices of the World Confederation of Billiard Sports.
