For the first time, teams from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, North Korea, Lebanon and Cambodia participate in it, and boxers from East Timor will make their debut in the Asian ring.

The Asian Youth Boxing Championship has started in Bangkok, within the framework of which the selection of participants for the Youth Olympic Games 2018 (will be held on October 6-18 in Buenos Aires) and the World Championship in this age category (will be held on November 17-26 in St. Petersburg) will take place. It is no coincidence that the motto of this event is “The Future Starts Here.”

The Asian Championship will last until April 28, the semi-finals and finals will take place on April 26 and April 27, respectively. Boys and girls will compete with each other in 10 weight categories, and only two teams - India and Kazakhstan (Uzbekistan put up a full male squad) announced the full squads in all categories. Thailand is represented at the championship by seven boys and six girls.

Vice-President of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA), President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Serik Konakbaev said that the current championship has a record number of participants: 235 athletes from 35 countries are registered, with Cambodia, Lebanon, North Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and East Timor represented for the first time. For the latter, this championship is generally a debut in the Asian ring.

“We are glad that the boxing ranks of Asia are replenishing, this progressive growth is observed from competition to competition,” Konakbaev summed up.
