Athletes at the Tokyo Games will be required to take a COVID-19 test every four days.

Athletes who will take part in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics this summer will be required to take a coronavirus test at least once every four days. This is stated in the list of rules for athletes, which was published on Tuesday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

It is noted that the frequency of PCR testing will depend on the sport and the schedule of the competition. Checks are supposed to be carried out in a specialized laboratory on the territory of the Olympic or Paralympic village. If the athlete lives outside these facilities, he will have to use the dedicated special transport to take the tests. The results of the test can be tracked through a dedicated smartphone application.

When an infection is detected, other athletes will be informed immediately through another contact tracing application that does not store personal data, but only warns of the potential risk. It has been in use in Japan since last summer and is mandatory for those attending the Tokyo Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was postponed for a year and will now take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The Paralympic Games will be held from August 24 to September 5.
