A protected zone will appear in the Khabarovsk Territory around the nature monument of regional significance "Lake Gassi", where the red-book Far Eastern turtle lives. The governor of the region Mikhail Degtyarev wrote about the creation of the zone on Thursday in his Telegram channel.

"During the direct line at the end of December 2022, scientists from the Institute of Water and Environmental Problems of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences requested to strengthen control over the specially protected natural area in the area of Lake Gassi. This is the Nanai district of the Khabarovsk Territory. The Far Eastern leatherback turtle lives there - a unique species of freshwater soft-bodied turtles included in the Red Books of Russia and the Khabarovsk Territory. <...> In order to preserve the unique species of turtles, I signed a decree on the creation of a protection zone for the nature monument of regional significance "Lake Gassi", - Mikhail Degtyarev wrote.

He noted that the federal highway passes near the lake, and the lake itself is visited by fishermen and lovers of unorganized recreation. "In addition to the turtle, other rare species of animals and birds, such as the great white heron, the big booze, and from amphibians - the Far Eastern zherlyanka, have chosen Lake Gussie. Rare plant species also grow here, for example, Japanese hornworm," the head of the region added.
