Adult citizens of India will be able to be revaccinated against COVID-19 for free.

All Indian adults aged 18 to 59 years inclusive will be able to receive free booster doses of the coronavirus vaccine for the next 75 days. This was reported on Wednesday by the Press Trust of India news agency, citing an unnamed senior official.

"The government plans to launch a special campaign lasting 75 days, during which people aged 18 to 59 will be given free doses of revaccination in state vaccination centers starting from July 15," the publication quotes the official as saying.

According to this information, the campaign for the introduction of the third dose of the vaccine will be carried out as part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of India's independence, which the country is celebrating this year.

"The majority of the Indian population received the second dose [of the vaccine] more than nine months ago. Studies by the Indian Medical Research Council and other international research institutes have shown that antibody levels decrease approximately six months after initial vaccination with both doses. But revaccination increases the immune response," the official added.

To date, less than 1% of the target population aged 18 to 59 years have received a booster dose of the vaccine in India, which has a population of more than 1.3 billion people, the Indian Ministry of Health indicates.
