Construction of a new runway began at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport. This was announced by the head of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko in his Telegram channel on Wednesday.
"Today we have launched the construction of a new runway in the main air harbor of Sakhalin. This is a truly historic event," Valery Limarenko wrote.
The existing strip is almost 60 years old, it has almost exhausted its resource. Therefore, the regional authorities appealed to the federal center with an initiative on the need to build a new lane. This proposal was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Limarenko noted that the new runway will be built according to all modern standards. It will increase flight safety, as well as ensure the reception of all types of aircraft. This means that they will be able to transport even more passengers, new routes will appear. Due to the increase in the category of the airfield, operational meteorological minimums will be reduced, which will reduce failures due to adverse weather conditions. Work on the construction of the strip will be completed in 2024.
A new lane is being built west of the current one. Its length will be 3.4 thousand meters, width - 60 m with three connecting tracks. The former lane is planned to be used as a main taxiway, which will also serve the airport to ensure safety and regularity of flights, it is specified on the website of the regional government.
"We are building lanes all over the country, this is the 17th one on my account. This strip is the "sister" of Pulkovo and Sheremetyevo. Modern means of planting are provided here. It has the second category, that is, it is all-weather, which is very important for operation in an island climate," Boris Sakun, General Director of the Regional Construction Company, is quoted in the message.
A large aviation hub is being created at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport. A new terminal complex will be introduced there, which will be able to receive up to 5 million passengers per year.
