From January 1, 2019, a law signed by President Shavkat Merziyoyev comes into force in the Republic.

Currently, citizens of the Republic can travel abroad with a general passport, which is also a foreign passport. The permission to cross the border is now a special sticker or a round seal.

As of January 2019, this practice is cancelled. Citizens of Uzbekistan will be issued a foreign passport for 10 years. If there is already an exit visa in the general passport, the citizen can freely leave the Republic before its expiration date. As a rule, it is one year. In addition, non-redeemed biometric general passports issued before 2021 also give the right to travel abroad.

The law on the abolition of exit visas was signed by the head of the Republic in August 2017. As noted in the document, the existence of the practice of issuing visas -  “a deterrent for the free movement of citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”

The introduction of a new type of foreign passport is a way to minimize bureaucratic delays and minimize the misuse of administrative resources. In addition, the leadership of Uzbekistan believes that the abolition of exit visas will make it as easy as possible for citizens of the Republic to pass through border and customs control.
