President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov awarded Lieutenant-General Sergey Kobylash, commander of the Long-Range Aviation of the Aerospace Forces, for a feat accomplished in 2008, TASS reports.

The pilot was awarded the highest state award of the republic — Order "Uatsamonga".

"Sergey Kobylash in August 2008 commanded the 368th assault aviation regiment. During an attack on a Georgian military convoy south of Tskhinvali, his Su-25 was hit by two portable anti-aircraft missiles, which disabled both engines. The pilot got out of dive and steered the plane as far as possible from residential buildings and ejected. In October 2008, he received the title of Hero of Russia" — the message says.

Bibilov noted that the Heroes of Russia, who received the title for South Ossetia, deserve to be heroes of Ossetia. "Their heroism is worthy of our highest award" — quote the words of the head of the republic in his press service.

On the night of 8 August, 2008, Georgia attacked South Ossetia. Russia stood up to protect the civilian population and its own peacekeepers who have been working in the region since 1992 . As a result of the five-day war, more than a thousand people died, 72 of them — Russian servicemen. 26 August 2008, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
