On the occasion of his accession to the throne, Emperor Naruhito will give four banquets next autumn instead of seven.

This decision was made by the government of the Land of the Rising Sun following the work of a special committee. It was led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. After the ceremony of Naruhito's accession to the throne, four banquets will be given, two of which will be held in the buffet format. The total number of guests of the celebrations will be 2.6 thousand people, Interfax specifies.

Some analysts believe that the decision to reduce the number of banquets was also dictated by considerations of economy. Thus, the Cabinet of Ministers abandoned the idea of modernizing the imperial car, which is already almost 30 years old. It would have cost the treasury 18 million yen ($160,000). To replace the old one, the monarch will be ordered a new limousine with better safety and economy characteristics.

Crown Prince Naruhito will assume the Japanese throne in May 2019 after his father, Emperor Akihito, resigns. In Japan, for the first time in 200 years, the monarch renounces power during his lifetime. The ceremony of accession of Crown Prince Naruhito to the throne will take place on October 22, 2019. About 2.5 thousand guests are expected at the solemn event. In the evening, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife will give a gala dinner, to which about 900 foreign guests will be invited.
