Every year on May 9, the President of Russia lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin wall.

Traditionally, this ceremony takes place after the Victory Day parade on Red Square, but in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, the parade was postponed due to the epidemiological situation.

Vladimir Putin was unaccompanied. The Guard of Honor and the Presidential Orchestra lined up on the alley of the Alexander Garden.
“Dear citizens of Russia! - The President greeted the Russians, - Dear veterans!

Dear friends!

I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart Happy Victory Day!

For all of us, this is the most important, dearest holiday. We always celebrate it solemnly and publicly, all together.

The spiritual, moral significance of Victory Day remains invariably great, and our attitude towards it remains sacred.

This is our memory and pride, the history of our country, the history of every family, a part of our soul, which was passed on to us by fathers and mothers, our grandparents.

Today, we acutely feel all the greatness of their destinies, remember those who are no longer with us, look with love at their faces in photographs of different years, wish long life to our veterans, bow to the great generation of winners.

They have done so much for the Motherland that it cannot be measured in any way, nothing can pay for it. They saved the Fatherland, the lives of future generations, liberated Europe, defended the world, restored cities and villages, achieved grandiose achievements.

We pay tribute to the endless recognition of the great, sacrificial feat of the Soviet people, people of different nationalities standing shoulder to shoulder at the front and in the rear. Time has no power over their courage, unity, dignity and truly steel fortitude.

Dear friends!

Here, near the Kremlin walls, a sacred place for all of us. Day and night, an eternal flame burns in memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War. Here lies the Unknown Soldier. We come here to bow to him and all the defenders of the Motherland, the heroes who forever remained in mass, unknown graves near Moscow and Smolensk, Stalingrad and Kursk, near Sevastopol and Minsk, Kyiv and Riga, near Berlin and Vienna, on the Pulkovo Heights, on the banks of the Neva , the Dnieper, the Danube, the Vistula and the Oder.

Millions of the fallen did not see, did not wait for the Victory - the Victory they so dreamed of, believed that they would defeat the enemy and return to their home. And they fought for it, fought to the last breath, gave their lives so that we, our children and grandchildren, those who have not yet been born, who have to come to this world, who defended and saved the Soviet soldier, lived.
We bow our heads before the blessed memory of all those who did not return from the war, before the memory of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fellow soldiers, relatives, friends".

Vladimir Putin announced a moment of silence, then continued:

“Dear friends!

75 years passed as the Great Patriotic War ended. We will definitely, as usual, widely and solemnly celebrate the anniversary date, we will do it with dignity, as our duty to those who have suffered, achieved and accomplished the Victory.

There will be our the main parade on Red Square, and the people's march of the "Immortal Regiment" - a march of our grateful memory and inseparable, blood, living connection between generations.

Our veterans fought for life against death . And we will always look up to their unity and resilience.

We are united by a common memory and common hopes, our common aspirations, our responsibility for the present and future.

We know and firmly believe that we are invincible when we are together.

Happy Holidays to you!

Happy Victory Day!
