The border has remained closed for more than two years for quarantine-free travel by citizens since the start of the pandemic.

The only candidate for the post of the new head of administration of Hong Kong John Lee promised to seek an early opening of the border with mainland China. It has remained closed to non-quarantine travel since the beginning of the pandemic.

“I know this is a big challenge. But I will start negotiations as soon as possible. I intend to pragmatically advance the solution of this issue, ”the Hong Kong version of the China Daily quoted him on Tuesday.

According toJohn Lee, the border between Hong Kong and the neighboring southern Chinese province of Guangdong creates serious inconvenience for many businessmen, foreigners, scientists, teachers.

Hong Kong was considering the possibility of opening the border with mainland China at the end of last year. However, these plans were disrupted by a new local outbreak of covid. Currently, it is on the decline, and local authorities have been easing restrictive measures in this special administrative region since Thursday.

The election of a new head of Hong Kong's administration will be held on May 8 and will be held on a non-alternative basis. John Lee, the city's former chief enforcer and until recently the second-highest post of chief secretary, is the only registered candidate and is backed by Beijing. There is little doubt that he will be elected by the Electoral College to lead the region.

The term of office of the new chief executive will begin on July 1, the day of the 25th anniversary of the transfer of the former British enclave to the jurisdiction of the PRC under the formula "one country - two systems."
