The Russian language enjoys considerable support in India.

The Russian language enjoys broad support in India, which comes not only from the government, but also from people. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), acting under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South Asian Republic, told TASS on Tuesday.

"When I was a student myself, I remember from those times that people were learning Russian. There are Russian language departments in various universities in India. The Russian language enjoys considerable support in India. And this support comes not only from the government, but also from the people," he said. According to Sahasrabuddhe, "language learning cannot be imposed."

The head of ICCR noted the need for more translators from Russian to Hindi and other languages spoken in India. "There are classic Russian novels and other literary works. They need to be translated into many Indian languages. Who will work on it? Only Indians can or Russians who know Indian languages. It needs to be promoted," he stressed.
