China's foreign trade volume increased by more than 8% in January-May

There are tangible improvements in China's foreign trade: in the first five months of the year, its volume increased by more than 8% year–on-year to 16 trillion yuan. Exports increased the most – by 11.4% and amounted to almost 9 trillion yuan, while imports exceeded 7 trillion yuan.

Li Kuiwen, Director of the Department of Statistics and Analysis of the Main Customs Administration of the People's Republic of China:

"Despite all the difficulties, China's foreign trade has achieved steady growth in the first five months. In particular, in May there was a monthly increase of almost 20% in the volume of imports and exports in the Yangtze River Delta region. And the restoration of foreign trade is taking place in Shanghai."

Imports and exports of products from China to the ASEAN countries, the European Union, the United States and South Korea increased by an average of more than 8% year-on-year. The volume of foreign trade with the countries participating in the "One Belt, One Road" initiative increased by almost 17% year–on–year in the first five months.

Li Kuiwen, Director of the Statistics and Analysis Department of the General Customs Administration:

"Economic and trade exchanges between China and the countries of the "One Belt, One Road" have expanded even more. States can effectively interact in the production and supply chain."

The main factor that contributed to such results was state support. Thanks to accelerated cargo clearance, tax cuts, refunds and other measures, companies were able to cope with the consequences of the pandemic.

Torrential rain caused landslides and floods in southern China

Days of heavy rains caused landslides and floods in several provinces and regions of China. Employees of the emergency services of the Kangshi County of LongYan city had to eliminate the consequences of the rampant elements.

Agricultural land in Kanshi was severely affected by the elements. The rain destroyed corn, eggplant and other crops.

Lin Yuchun, an employee of the Rural Rehabilitation Center in Kangshi County:

"We help farmers to carry out rescue operations using scientific methods. This will help to minimize losses."

After a two-day downpour in the city of Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, several roads were affected by a landslide. The entire roadway was covered with rocks, mud and branches. In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a 40-meter section of the highway was filled in due to the collapse of a mountain slope. The local road administration has introduced traffic control and sent excavators to clear the dirt from the road.

Chinese radio telescope has detected a new signal

An international team of scientists has discovered a new repetitive fast radio burst using the FAST radio telescope, which is called the "Chinese Celestial Eye". The results of the study were published in the authoritative scientific journal "Nature".

A fast radio burst is a short and strong burst of radio waves. It lasts only a few milliseconds, but releases as much electricity as is generated on Earth in tens of billions of years. Such signals were first discovered in 2007, but so far the origin and mechanism of their formation are one of the biggest mysteries for modern astronomy. According to scientists, the recently discovered signal may come from a dwarf galaxy that is three billion light-years away from Earth.

Jiang Peng, Chief Engineer of the FAST Operation and Development Center:

"This radio burst is suitable for cosmological research. We will probably be able to expand the boundaries in understanding the mechanism of its formation."

The FAST radio telescope was put into operation on January 11, 2020. Since last April, the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has started accepting applications for observations from scientists from different countries and regions. With the help of this equipment, it was possible to detect about 500 pulsars – sources of various radiation in space, and based on the data obtained, scientists have published more than 120 scientific articles.
