Russian Muslims have donated more than 26 million rubles to the Zakat Charitable Foundation to help victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the press service of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (DOOM) of the Russian Federation reported on Wednesday.

"With the blessing and call of the Chairman of the Duma of the Russian Federation and the Council of Muftis of Russia, Mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin, the Zakat Charitable Foundation announced a collection of assistance to victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. On the morning of February 8, more than 26 million rubles were collected," the message says.

According to the spiritual administration, warm blankets, heaters, winter clothing, portable chargers (powerbanks), thermoses, tents and sleeping bags are urgently needed to support and provide first aid to survivors. These items can be brought to collection points in the capital — to the office of the Zakat Foundation on Melnikov Street, as well as to the premises of the Moscow Cathedral Mosque and Memorial Mosque.

"The collected items will be handed over to representatives of the Turkish Embassy for further shipment to the affected regions. Items for shipment are accepted until February 12," the Muslim organization reported.

The president of the foundation is the head of the Duma of the Russian Federation Mufti Ravil Gainutdin, the chairman of the foundation Council is Mufti of Moscow Ildar Alyautdinov.

About the earthquake An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred on February 6 in Kahramanmaras province in southeastern Turkey.

The tremors, followed by hundreds of aftershocks, were felt in ten provinces of the country, as well as in neighboring states, including Syria. According to the latest data, more than 8.5 thousand people were killed in Turkey, more than 49 thousand were injured.
