Indian Prime Minister Modi called for an end to disrespectful attitude towards women.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi called on the nation on Monday to commit to ending disrespectful treatment of women. The Prime Minister said this while delivering a speech at a solemn event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of India from British colonial rule.

"It is important that in our speeches and behavior we do not allow anything that would humiliate the dignity of women," the prime minister said, addressing the nation from the wall of the Red Fort in New Delhi. He recalled the contribution of women freedom fighters in India, such as participants in the anti-English Sepoy uprising of 1857-59. Lakshmi Bai, Jalkari Bai, Begum Hazrat Mahal, and Kittur Chennamma, who led the armed resistance to the British East India Company in 1824.

"In all aspects of life, our daughters and mothers make a great contribution to the development of India. <...> Respect for women is an important pillar for the development of India," he addedNarendra Modi.

He also pointed out that in order to achieve the goals outlined for India's development over the next 25 years, women must play a crucial role. "If we elevate women and empower them, we will be able to achieve the goals in a shorter time and with less effort," the prime minister said.
