Over 421.99 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered in China

In China, more than 421.99 million doses of drugs have been administered as of May 17 as part of a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign, according to the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China.

In Anhui province (East China), by 12:00 on May 17, a total of 2,096 vaccination sites were established and more than 11.72 million doses of drugs were used, while the maximum daily vaccination capacity reached almost 1.3 million doses.

The vaccination process in this province has accelerated significantly after new cases of local infection were recently recorded there.

In Beijing, coverage of people aged 18 and over who received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine reached 79.07% as of noon 16 May, with a rate of 53% among people aged 60 and over, according to data from the Beijing Special Working Group on Vaccination.

According to the Beijing Health Commission, the number of doses of COVID vaccines administered in the city so far -19 exceeded 28M with a reach of 15.5M people, or 72% of the 21.54 million inhabitants of the capital.

Li Tong, chief physician of the Department of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at Beijing Yuan Hospital, said older people with chronic diseases are the most in need of the vaccine, urging older people who have no contraindications to the drugs as get vaccinated as soon as possible.

According to the COVID-19 Vaccine Technical Guidelines, patients with chronic, stable health conditions and effectively drug-controlled diseases are not considered to be contraindicated for vaccination and are advised to receive vaccination.

Shanghai from May 17 began to include residents aged 76 years t and older in their program of voluntary and free vaccination against COVID-19. Now, residents aged 76 and over who are healthy and have no contraindications to vaccination can be vaccinated at designated sites.

According to the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as of May 16, a total of 1865 doses were administered to people in this age group.

Experts warn that people, especially those with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, are more vulnerable to the coronavirus and have a higher chance of developing severe cases. Therefore, early vaccination is recommended for those who are healthy and have no contraindications.

In Dalian City (Liaoning Province, Northeast China), as of 10:00 on May 15, 4.58 million doses of vaccines have been administered, and the percentage of vaccinated target population aged 18 years and over exceeded 60%.

Given the recent surge in locally transmitted cases in the country, people should get vaccinated as soon as possible, the Guangdong Center for Disease Control and Prevention urged.

By the end of May 16, about 36 million doses of vaccines had been used across Guangdong, with about 27 million people receiving at least one dose and about 9 million people receiving two doses.
