The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has provided $1.7 billion in humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan. This was announced on Wednesday by Hamad al-Hebsi, adviser to the UAE Embassy in Moscow, speaking at a meeting of the Moscow format on Afghanistan.

"In recent years, assistance has been provided in the amount of 6.1 billion dirhams [UAE], that is, 1.7 billion US dollars. It was mainly aimed at providing [the population of Afghanistan] with food, as well as [needs] in such areas as healthcare, water supply, [improving] the sanitary situation, housing and education, special attention was paid to [helping] women and children," the diplomat said. However, he did not explain for what period the UAE authorities provided the Afghan people with such a volume of humanitarian aid.

Hamad Al-Hebsi added that more than 285 tons of food and medical supplies were delivered from the UAE to Afghanistan via a humanitarian air bridge. In addition, after the establishment of control over Afghanistan by the radical Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation), the UAE evacuated 40 thousand Afghans and foreign citizens from this country.

The Moscow format for Afghanistan includes Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Representatives of Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Turkey attended the meeting on Wednesday as guests. The previous meeting of the Moscow format was held on October 20, 2021. Then a delegation headed by the deputy chairman of the interim Government of the Taliban, Abdul Salam Hanafi, took part in it. However, according to the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Afghanistan, Director of the second Department of Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zamir Kabulov, this time the Taliban will not attend the event.

By the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation of February 14, 2003, the Taliban movement was recognized as a terrorist organization. His activities are prohibited in Russia.
