The leader of the country, Kim Jong-un, called for strengthening border control in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

The North Korean authorities have identified the first case of coronavirus infection in the country. This is stated in the message of the Central News Agency of Korea (KCNA) circulated on Thursday.

“A major emergency occurred in the country, the anti-epidemic front was broken through, which has been reliably protected for two years and three months since February 2020. ", it notes. “After careful examination of the results of analyzes of samples collected in the capital on May 8, it was decided that they coincide with the omicron BA.2 strain subtype, which has been rapidly spreading around the world in recent times,” the message says.

In connection with the incident, a meeting of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea was convened, which was attended by the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un. “We must do everything to prevent security gaps, we should intensify work at the borders and at the [coronavirus] front,” he said.

Previously, the authorities of the republic did not report the detection of cases of coronavirus infection.

In the context of the pandemic, the DPRK authorities at the beginning of 2020 took emergency measures to protect the country from infection, including closing the borders of the state. According to the Yonhap news agency, Pyongyang did not agree to accept the supply of coronavirus vaccines, which the republic relied on under the international COVAX mechanism. After that, the COVAX quota for providing the DPRK with drugs was canceled, they were redirected to other countries.
