The restrictions covered 35 of the country's 47 prefectures, including the Greater Tokyo Area.

Japan's stringent measures against the spread of the coronavirus, which were introduced by the Japanese authorities in a number of prefectures in the country, expired on Monday. This regime has been in effect on Japanese territory since the end of January.

Enhanced measures provided for the restriction of the work of public catering establishments and other institutions, as well as the holding of mass events. At their peak, they covered 35 of Japan's 47 prefectures, including the densely populated Greater Tokyo Area.

Japan has struggled with another wave of the omicron-strain pandemic since the beginning of the year. On peak days, about 100,000 new cases of infection were recorded daily in the country. Meanwhile, in recent weeks, the dynamics has declined, about 40 thousand cases of infection are detected per day.
