Iraq steps up measures to combat coronavirus

Iraqi authorities have made it mandatory for citizens to wear masks and banned all gatherings due to the pandemic.


The Government of Iraq passed a decree on Tuesday mandating the wearing of masks in public places and a ban on any kind of gathering amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. This was reported by the Iraqi TV channel Shafak News.


“The government decided to oblige employees of ministries, departments and other government agencies, as well as other citizens of the country to wear masks and keep the necessary distance between people”,  - the channel quotes the words of the representative of the Iraqi Cabinet of Ministers Hassan Nazim. He added that a ban on "any form of citizens' gatherings" is also being introduced.


Over the past 24 hours, 1,135 new cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Iraq, according to the Ministry of Health. The milestone in 1.1 thousand was exceeded for the first time in the last few weeks.


Currently, Iraq ranks first among the countries of the Middle East in the total number of people infected with coronavirus. According to the Iraqi Ministry of Health, the number of people infected in the country is 621,755. The number of deaths among patients with coronavirus has reached 13,068.
