IOC President Thomas Bach arrives in Tokyo

The head of the IOC arrived in Japan on the eve of the Summer Olympic Games.


International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bacharrives at Tokyo's Haneda International Airport ahead of the Summer Olympics starting on July 23rd. This was reported on Thursday, citing sources by the Kyodo agency.

It is expected that the first three days of his stay in JapanThomas Bach will spend self-isolation in a hotel. During this time, he will participate in remote meetings. The official program of his visit, including meetings with representatives of the arriving delegations, will begin on July 12. On July 16, the President of the IOC, in particular, is scheduled to travel to Hiroshima. During his stay in Japan, Thomas Bach, who was previously vaccinated against the new coronavirus, will comply with all necessary restrictions and rules of conduct established by the organizers of the Olympics.

The arrival of the head of the IOC coincided with the decision of the Japanese government on the introduction of a state of emergency (ES) in Tokyo due to the coronavirus from July 12 to August 22. It is expected that the actions of the Japanese Cabinet will be taken into account by the organizers of the Games, who will soon hold a meeting on the admission of local spectators to the competition. Earlier, the organizers stated that in the event of a state of emergency, local fans may not be allowed to enter sports facilities.

The Tokyo Olympics were supposed to be held from July 24 to August 9, 2020. Due to the pandemic, the competition was postponed for a year, now they will be held from July 23 to August 8. On March 20, the organizers finally decided to hold the Games without foreign fans. On June 21, a limit of 10 thousand people was set for the admission of local spectators, the occupancy of sports facilities during the competition should not exceed 50%.
