Indian strain of coronavirus causes global concern

A strain of coronavirus first identified in India has been classified as a strain of global concern due to its increased transmissibility in preliminary studies. 

This was announced by a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) at a regular press conference on May 10.

Strain B.1.617, first time discovered born in India last December, is the fourth strain of global concern that needs to be monitored and analyzed in more detail. The remaining three strains are those that were first identified in the UK, South Africa and Brazil.

India currently has the second highest number of infected cases in the world. As of May 10, the number stood at 22,662,575 with 246,116 deaths, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.
