India to supply Philippines with three ground-based missile systems

India and the Philippines signed a contract for the supply of BrahMos missile systems.


India and Philippines have signed a contract for supply of BrahMos missile systems (Brahmos) for  $375 million. This was stated in a message published on Friday on the website of the Ministry of Defense of India.


According to the agency, India will supply the Philippines with three ground-based missile systems. Under the terms of the deal, India will train Philippine operators to operate the complexes, and also provide logistical support.

Earlier in January, the head of the Philippine Ministry of National Defense, Delfin Lorenzana, announced that India and the Philippines had agreed on the terms of the deal for the acquisition of BrahMos complexes. According to him, the draft contract was proposed in 2017. In 2020, it was approved by the administration of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.


The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is manufactured by the Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace. It was developed by the Russian NPO Mashinostroeniya and the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization. Her first test launch took place in 2001.
