The number of people vaccinated against coronavirus infection in India exceeded 11 million.

The total number of citizens vaccinated in the nationwide vaccination campaign has reached 11,085,173, according to the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

According to the Ministry of Health, India demonstrates the highest rate of vaccination against coronavirus in the world.

So far, vaccinations in the country are made with two vaccines: Covishield ("Covishield") - the local name of the drug developed by the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca ("AstraZeneca") and Oxford University, and Covaxin (Covaxin) from the Indian company Bharat Biotech (Bharat Biotech). In addition, about 20 more drugs are undergoing clinical trials in the country at various stages, including the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.

India's Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced at a press conference last Monday that vaccination of people over 50 years of age will begin in India in March. He also noted that 18-19 coronavirus vaccines will probably already be available in the country in the next few months.

In India, vaccination began on 16 January. It is planned that up to million people will be vaccinated at the first stage: 10 million medical workers and   million employees who are in risk zone (policemen, military personnel, employees of civil defense departments). Then people over 50 years old and people under the age of  50 years old with concomitant diseases will be vaccinated (about 270 million people in total). Indian authorities previously reported that they plan to vaccinate about 300 million people by July this year. Vaccination is carried out on a voluntary basis.
