India approves Sputnik V registration application

The Indian Drug Expert Committee has approved the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.


The expert committee of the Central Drug Standards Control Organization of India on Monday approved an application for emergency use in the country of the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V. This was reported by TV channel NDTV.

According to him, now the vaccine must be approved by the Drug Controller General of India. After that, the drug will become the third vaccine to be used in India.

So far, vaccinations in India are done with two vaccines: this is Covishield (Covishield), developed by the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca (AstraZeneca) and the University of Oxford , as well as the Covaxin vaccine (Covaxin) from the Indian company Bharat Biotech (Bharat Biotech). Both vaccines are produced in India.

Indian pharmaceutical company Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (Dr. Reddys Laboratories, DRL) applied in February for a permit for the limited use of Sputnik V in India. The company is ready to distribute the Russian drug.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has also agreed to produce a vaccine with several Indian pharmaceutical companies. The vaccine previously passed intermediate trials in India, in which 1.6 thousand volunteers participated.

Russia was the first in the world to register a vaccine against coronavirus on August 11, 2020, it was called Sputnik V. The drug was developed by the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N. F. Gamaleya. It has already been registered in many countries around the world.
