Above the unusually deserted Jerusalem, the bells of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher ring loudly, announcing the descent of the Holy Fire and the beginning of Orthodox Easter.

Like all previous millennia and centuries, the annual miracle happened on Holy Saturday of Holy Week.

The ceremony of accepting spontaneously ignited fire, through the prayers of believers, has been illuminated for many centuries and has never changed. At noon on April 18, the service of sending fire began with a solemn tour of the small chapel - Kuvuklia, standing in the center of the Temple of the Lord, by Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem. For the first time in at least a millennium and a half, only the clergy took part in the very order of the descent of Fire. Lay people were not admitted due to the threat of the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. The heads of the Orthodox churches - Armenian, Coptic and Assyrian - entered the temple.

After the descent of the Holy Fire, the Patriarch of Jerusalem left Kuvuklia with torches from candles in his hands. Then a solemn procession passed through the Old City towards the Jaffa Gate, where numerous clergy began to light lamps in order to take the miraculous flame to all directions of the world. The Fire arrived in Moscow on a special flight before the start of the solemn Easter service in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
