Chinese authorities will test 12 million people in Hangzhou for coronavirus.

Chinese authorities will begin mass PCR testing on Thursday in Hangzhou, a city of more than 12 million people. China Central Television reported this on Wednesday, citing the city administration.

Residents of Hangzhou from April 28 will have to take PCR tests every 48 hours, the report said. Those who do not pass the test on time will be prohibited from visiting public places and using public transport. A specific date for the completion of the testing program has not been specified.

Hangzhou is located in the eastern part of China near Shanghai, where a lockdown is currently in place. It is in Hangzhou that the headquarters of the largest Chinese companies are located, including the online trading platform Alibaba Group and the automaker Geely.

Late last month, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Shanghai authorities began to massively close residential complexes in parts of the metropolis for covid testing. One way or another, by the end of March, almost the entire population of Shanghai spent from two to three days to a week in home quarantine.
