The Global Energy Association has completed the acceptance of applications for the award of the same name in the 2020-2021 nomination cycle, setting several new records in the history of the award, despite the pandemic.

For the first time, the long list includes 36 countries at once, which is 3 times higher than in 2019 (then there were 12 countries), and 1.8 times higher than in 2020 (20 countries).

The 2021 list includes scientists not only from the countries of the so-called “golden billion” (North America and Western Europe), but also nominations and candidates from Eastern Europe. Europe - Hungary and Latvia, from the Middle East and Africa - Algeria, Burkina - Faso, Ghana, Gambia, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Cameroon, Madasgascar, Nigeria, Togo, and from Latin America - Mexico and Uruguay. At the same time, all strict rules for nomination in accordance with the most stringent academic standards have been preserved.

It is important to note that for the first time in history there are four women among the candidates: from Kazakhstan, India, Zimbabwe and the USA.

Most applications this year came from Russia (24). Candidates represent not only metropolitan scientific organizations, but also the Volga region and Siberia. The United States (21), Japan (5), Canada (4) and the United Kingdom (4) follow in terms of the number of nominated submissions.

The growth of geography was achieved by popularizing the award, including at the World Energy Council in London, by stimulating a truly universal dialogue on how the “energy transition” should develop and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. An additional factor was the internationalization of the Supervisory Board of the Association. Within a year, it included the Director General of the African Energy Association Abel Didier Tella, from Latin America - the ex-president of Uruguay Julio Maria Sanguinetti, and from Europe - the founder of the London-Brussels Influence group Peter Wilding.

Nomination structure and procedure

Of the 106 nomination submissions, 34 applications are devoted to traditional energy, 45 - alternative, and 27 - new ways of obtaining energy, as well as (for the first time) the direction of "management". This is in line with trends in global energy, where, according to the World Energy Agency's baseline forecast, the renewable energy boom in rich countries in the next decade will still be accompanied by growing demand for fossil fuels from the Asia-Pacific region.

According to the procedure, each of the applications will be submitted to the judgment of independent experts who, according to a number of criteria (including novelty, scientific and practical value, compliance with energy security standards, ) will make a shortlist of 15 applications that received the highest average score in one of the three categories. At the final stage, the short list will be considered by the members of the International Committee, which includes 20 prominent scientists from 14 countries.

In 2021, a new tradition will continue, according to which the names of laureates are announced at venues in the Russian regions. If in 2020 the announcement ceremony was held in Kaluga, then this year the International Committee will meet for its meeting on the days of the Tatarstan Petrochemical Forum in Kazan (September 6-7). The actual presentation of the awards will take place as part of the Russian Energy Week in Moscow (October 13-15, 2021).

At the same time, the Association announces that the awards for 2020 (when it was impossible due to the pandemic) will be held as part of the Global Energy session at the St. Petersburg International Economic forum (June 2-5), organized by the Roscongress Foundation.
