From May 31, the Azerbaijani authorities are lifting a number of quarantine restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic, in particular, the requirement to wear protective masks in the open air is canceled and the Baku metro resumes operation. This decision of the government was announced on Tuesday at a briefing by the operational headquarters under the Cabinet of Ministers of the country.

“From May 31, the requirement to wear protective masks in the open air is cancelled. Also, from this date, the Baku Metro resumes its work,” the assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Shahmar Movsumov announced the decision of the operational headquarters. According to him, passenger transportation between the regions of the country will also be resumed from May 31.

Shahmar Movsumov noted that this decision is connected with the normalization of the epidemiological situation in the country.

According to the decision authorities of the republic, from June 10, the next stage of quarantine easing begins. Since then, the activities of places of worship have resumed, large shopping centers and malls will open, and beaches will begin to receive visitors. In addition, from June 10, it will be possible to visit sports and recreation facilities. However, only holders of COVID passports will have access to them. According to Shahmar Movsumov, such passports or certificates will be of two types. One will be provided to citizens who have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. The second, called a certificate of immunity, is for citizens who have recovered from COVID-19.

The first case of coronavirus infection in Azerbaijan was detected on February 28 last year. The first peak of the epidemic occurred in June (up to 600 cases per day), the second - in November and December (an average of 3.5-4 thousand cases), the third - in April of this year (2-2.5 thousand cases). The daily maximum - 4,451 cases - was recorded on December 13, 2020. Since the beginning of May, there has been a gradual decrease in the daily increase in cases of infection, last Monday the lowest daily number of infections since the beginning of the year was recorded - 156. At the same time, after April 20, the number of recovered patients per day has consistently exceeded the number of new infections.

For immunization, CoronaVac preparations from the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech, Vaxzevria from the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca (so far only administered to people aged 60 years and older) and the Russian Sputnik V are used. According to the operational headquarters, more than 1.9 million people, or 19% of the population, have already been vaccinated in the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 332,610 cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in the republic, 321,132 people have recovered, and 4,867 patients have died.
