The heat wave in China has broken the 1961 record for duration and will intensify.

The abnormal heat wave that has been established this summer in a number of regions of China has become the longest since 1961 and continues to intensify. This was announced on Wednesday by the Central Meteorological Administration of the People's Republic of China.

According to Chinese weather forecasters, by August 15, the hot weather in China lasted a total of 64 days. This exceeded the record of the summer of 1961, when such temperature regimes lasted a total of 62 days.

"A comprehensive analysis shows that the current heat wave may continue, and its intensity will increase," the department said in a statement.

According to the number of weather stations where the temperature exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, this summer also updated the record — 262. Many of them recorded the highest rates in the entire history of observations. The previous record — 187 weather stations with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius — was set in the summer of 2013.
