Epidemiological situation gradually improves in Georgia

The Ministry of Health of Georgia says that the country is overcoming the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.


The peak of the third wave of the spread of coronavirus in Georgia has begun to decline. Amiran Gamkrelidze, Director General of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Georgia, said this on Monday at a briefing.

“Now, to a certain extent, we are overcoming the peak (of the third wave), he went down the slope. We can say that the epidemic situation is gradually improving,” Amiran Gamkrelidze said after a meeting of the interdepartmental coordinating council for the fight against coronavirus.

According to him, despite this, the daily statistics of deaths from coronavirus complications remains worrying. The country's chief epidemiologist expressed hope that the number of deaths from the consequences of the infection in Georgia will decrease approximately two weeks after the end of the third wave.

The epidemic situation in Georgia has been deteriorating since March. On April 11, Amiran Gamkrelidze announced that the third wave of the spread of coronavirus had begun in the country. The so-called British strain circulates mainly in the republic.

The first case of coronavirus infection in Georgia was detected on February 26, 2020. Over the past day, 504 cases of infection have been detected in the country. The total number of people infected since the beginning of the pandemic has reached 330,879 (8.87% of the population). During the day, 2,038 people recovered, in total during the epidemic - 304,935 patients. Over the past 24 hours, 27 people have died in the country from complications caused by the infection. A total of 4,363 deaths were registered during the pandemic.

Since March 15, the republic has been immunized with AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm. According to the Ministry of Health, up to 90 thousand people have already been vaccinated, which is 2.39% of the population. The authorities plan to vaccinate 60% of the adult population by the end of the year in order to form herd immunity.
