On the occasion of the Dragon Boat Festival, as Duanwu is also called, the Chinese Consulate General in Yekaterinburg hosted a reception, which was attended by Russian and Chinese students, representatives of cultural and educational organizations and other honored guests.

This is one of the most ancient holidays in China. It is usually celebrated on the days of the summer solstice, when the day is almost equal to the night, and the forces symbolizing the masculine principle "yang" are on the rise. The second name of the holiday is the double five, since it falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar.

People perceive this holiday as the onset of summer and summer heat, and with it the season of summer diseases. Therefore, among the Chinese, the rite of "rejection of evil" has become widespread, when they use various amulets made, among other things, from wormwood.

The holiday got its name from an ancient tradition - rowing boat races, which were made in the form of dragons. In Chinese families, a special treat is prepared for the holiday - zongzi: rice cooked in a special way, which is eaten with various additives, wrapping it in a reed or bamboo leaf soaked in hot water.

Particular attention is paid to children during the holiday. For them, multi-colored bracelets and necklaces of colored threads are woven, embroidered bags and other gifts are given to them.

Twelve years ago, the Duanwu holiday was recognized by the Chinese government as a National Cultural Heritage, and since 2007 it has been celebrated at the state level, moreover, the day of its celebration is declared non-working.
