The first 150,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine have been delivered to Kyrgyzstan.

The first 150,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine produced by the Chinese pharmaceutical corporation Sinopharm (Sinopharm) were delivered to Kyrgyzstan on Friday. This was reported to TASS in the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Republic.

“Today, 150,000 doses of the Chinese vaccine [Sinopharm] against coronavirus were delivered by air to the capital of the Republic,” a spokesman for the ministry said. As the head of the department, Alymkadyr Beishenaliev, stressed on Thursday, vaccination in the country will be free of charge and on a voluntary basis. First of all, medical workers, teachers, as well as military personnel of the border service will be vaccinated.

It is planned that the first batch of the vaccine will be sent to the capital, the adjacent Chui region and the southern regional center of Osh. This batch is enough to vaccinate 75,000 people. This is the first coronavirus vaccine delivered to the republic.

At the end of last year, Bishkek sent an application to the Russian Federation for a batch of Sputnik V vaccine, and it is expected to be delivered to the republic in the near future. The issue of the production of this drug in Kyrgyzstan is being discussed. The republic also expects to receive another 1.6 million doses of vaccines under the COVAX program. This is a drug from the Anglo-Swedish company AstraZeneca (AstraZeneca), but Bishkek has so far suspended negotiations on its supply to the republic. Preliminary large-scale vaccination in the country will begin in late March - early April.

In Kyrgyzstan, which is home to almost 6.5 million people, two outbreaks of the spread of coronavirus were recorded in a year. The first was at the end of June last year, when doctors registered from 900 to 1.6 thousand cases of infection daily. The second was at the end of last year, when the daily increase in the number of infected was about 300 per day. The state of emergency declared in March 2020 continues to operate in the country.
