The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization has confirmed China's accession to COVAX.

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) has confirmed China's accession to the COVAX international mechanism, which aims to provide equitable coverage of coronavirus vaccines to all countries when available. This was reported by Reuters on Friday with a link to a GAVI statement received at its disposal.

“This is fantastic news and adds even more momentum to our efforts to ensure global equitable access to vaccines for COVID-19,”  Alliance Seth Berkeley. This step, in his opinion, means that China will purchase vaccines through this mechanism, as well as other joining states.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said that on October 8, China and GAVI signed an agreement to officially join the COVAX international mechanism. According to her, although China has sufficient production capacity, and research and development in the field of coronavirus vaccine has reached the international high level, China still decided to join COVAX. She also noted that "PRC is taking this specific step to ensure efficient distribution of vaccines, especially to developing countries, and hopes that other countries with vaccine production capacity will join COVAX and support this mechanism."

Currently, more than 170 countries have joined the COVAX mechanism, which aims to accelerate the search for an effective vaccine for all countries. In addition, COVAX is supporting capacity building and procurement so that approximately 2 billion doses of vaccine can be fairly distributed by the end of 2021.

In accordance with the terms of the program, high-income countries pay for the purchase of vaccines, thereby subsidizing the so-called funded states in this area.
