Chinese inactivated vaccines have been shown to be effective against the delta strain of the coronavirus, and have also been shown to be safe in vaccinating the elderly.

Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a well-known Chinese expert in respiratory diseases, said this in an interview with China Media Corporation (CMG) on June 25.

The recent outbreak in the city of Guangzhou, the provincial capital Guangdong, in southern China, is the first time the country has seen a new strain of coronavirus called "delta" spread in neighborhoods. This strain, first identified in India, has a shorter incubation period and higher infectivity, and those infected take longer to recover.

Zhong Nanshan emphasized that Chinese vaccines have shown their effectiveness against the delta strain, and especially urged older people to get vaccinated as soon as possible, since vaccines have now been proven safe by tens of thousands of older people who have been vaccinated.

"We need to pay special attention to vaccinating older people. Before we have conducted many trials abroad, and in a short timeframe, with few older people and insufficient data to date to conclude that it is completely safe to vaccinate older people, but as more and more older people people already hundreds of thousands have been vaccinated, we have received confirmation of the safety of vaccines, so it is necessary to vaccinate more elderly people," the expert noted.

According to him, currently more than 90% of the vaccines distributed in China are inactivated, which have actually been proven to be effective and have few to no side effects.

"An inactivated vaccine certainly provides a protective effect. This is especially evident in the case of the "delta" strain. Laboratory data and limited clinical data from more than 160 patients in Guangzhou City confirmed the protective efficacy of the inactivated delta vaccine in the treatment of close contacts of the infected delta strain who received one or two components of the vaccine. Its protective efficacy is clear – the drug has been shown to be 60% effective in infections and 80% effective in severe disease. So you can get vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine with peace of mind," Zhong Nanshan stated.
