On October 24, Asia passed the 10 million mark of cases of infection with the new coronavirus and became the second region in the world after Latin America by this indicator. & nbsp;

Cases continue to rise in India, while slowing and falling sharply in other regions, Reuters reports.

Asia accounts for about a quarter of those infected, accounting for 42.1 million people with more than 163,000 deaths.

Reuters tally is based on official country reporting. The true number of cases and deaths is likely much higher, experts say, given shortcomings in testing and potential underreporting in many countries.

Overall, the region has reported improved pandemic control in recent weeks, with daily incidence is slowing in countries such as India, in stark contrast to the resurgence of COVID-19 in Europe and North America.

In the region, South Asia, led by India, has been hardest hit, with nearly 21% of reported coronavirus cases globally (57 000 infections per day) and 12% of deaths (average 764 per day). At the same time, China and Japan have been successful in containing the infection.

India's eastern neighbor Bangladesh is the second largest country in Asia, with almost 400,000 cases. But daily infections have slowed to 1,453, less than 40% from their July peak.

Authorities in the world's largest Muslim nation, Indonesia, are struggling to bring the outbreak under control. Indonesia is due to host the World Cup next year, so the government is rushing to deliver a vaccine.

Despite this, a World Health Organization expert said on Monday that Europe and North America should follow the example of Asian nations in persistently fighting against COVID-19, impose similar measures and quarantine restrictions on infected people.

UN emergency agency program chief Mike Ryan said the global death toll from COVID-19 could double to 2 million before being used to a widely used vaccine that will lead to curbing the pandemic.
